With a minute silence to start the game this weekend, Bicester had some time to reflect on the task ahead. Reading were a young, fit and ambitious side and they were quick to pressure the defensive line of Hollie, Laura and Mollie. The pressure paid off with countless short corners but Bicester showed their defensive prowess and combined with some impressive sliding dive saves from Jo, kept the score line down. Despite working tirelessly, it was inevitable Reading would score and they produced some skilled shots on goal, bring the score to 4-0 at half time.
As the second half started, our usual 10 minute dip was reduced to 2 minutes and heads lifted to ensure Reading knew we wouldn't let them have an easy win.
Play was more refined and Bicester worked hard to keep their shape, allowing space to open up and giving options to press higher. The midfielders, including dame of the game, Bea, were able to work the ball around, giving more options for the forwards to pressurise the Reading defenders and Bicester's hard work paid off when a touch line ball from Sheryl was pulled back to allow Irish to finish the play with a goal the keeper wasn't expecting.
Reading continued their assaults on goal and were able to extend their lead but despite the score line, Bicester demonstrated skill and determination, particularly in the second half, and shouldn't be too disheartened as Reading were definitely a well-organised side pushing for promotion this season.
Final score: Reading 7 - 1 Bicester
Goal scorer: Irish (Alison Haik)
Dame of the Game: Bea Gunn
Tit of the Team: Faye Walters
