With some of the team jet setting off to sunnier climes, including the Captain, it was yet another different starting line-up for the Ladies 1’s. But stand-in Captain Lorraine, was determined that the sun would still be shining in Bicester and had complete faith in every player in the team – and they did not disappoint.
Bicester totally dominated the first half with a fantastic display of positive attacking hockey. They gave their opponents no time to settle into the game at all. With a high press, Bicester continuously pressured Newbury’s defence, with excellent work from Faye, Nicky, Abbie, Hannah, Beth and Shannon. But despite all the possession, the ball would just not go in the goal. Beth hit the post - twice, Lorraine shot wide and Faye, Nicky and Hannah all saw their shots saved. Bicester had several short corners but Newbury’s defence stood firm. Half time was 0-0.
The half time team talk was very straightforward – let’s keep it going! The second half started brightly, but then Bicester lost their way and within 15 minutes found themselves 3-0 down. Their opponents simply made the most of their possession and short corners. Another 5 minutes later and it was 4-0. However, Bicester did not let their heads drop and managed to find their passing game again. A couple of short corners later and they finally got on the score sheet, courtesy of Amy, who scored for the second week running. Time however, was running out and although Bicester deserved more, they had to settle for just the one goal.
Nevertheless, the girls knew they had all played really well and despite not getting the right result, could take confidence from their performance into the next game.
Final score: Bicester 1 - 4 Newbury & Thatcham
Dame of the Game: Beth Forrest
Tit of the Team: Birthday girl Mollie Southam – for that hilarious throw!
