BICESTER HOCKEY CLUB - CLUB DAY 2011 - SUNDAY the 11th of SEPTEMBER

Return to the main site!

Bicester Hockey Club welcomed in the new league season, holding their annual Club day on Sunday.  They were honoured to have Sally Munday, the chief executive of England Hockey, and the Mayoress of Bicester – Rose Stratford, and her husband, Councillor Lawrie Stratford, in attendance as special guests.

In the morning, the junior section had a training session attended by over 50 children and run by Bicester’s chief coach Mark Stuart – Thompson. After the training session Sally Munday awarded medals and t-shirts (from sponsors of the day, Trysports) to some of the children taking part.

In the afternoon, it was the turn of the seniors, who play their traditional 7-a-side mixed tournament for the Des Jenkins trophy. Each team comprises of one team member from each of the seven Bicester league sides and provides an opportunity for players to play fun hockey with other club players they would not normally play with.. In addition to the club sides, the honorary members, featuring ex-members of the club and Ruth – Des Jenkins' daughter, fielded a side. The trophy was won by team “Red” captained by Adam Buxey after a hard fought and fun contest. Refreshments were served by club members throughout the day and all proceeds went towards club funds which are used to keep down subscriptions and match fees to make Bicester hockey affordable to as many players as possible.

Both of Bicester's 1st teams gained promotion this season and for the first time ever, Bicester Ladies 1's team were unbeaten all season in League Division 1 and have secured promotion to Trysports Premier 2 division (another first!). This was an exceptional season with the team gelling well and creating a very positive atmosphere. The team played 22 games, won 22 games. Scored 134 goals and conceded just 9. They achieved the maximum of 66 points. The highest goal scorer was ex England International Kathryn James with an extraordinary 53!

Bicester Hockey Club is always on the lookout for new members, regardless of ability or whether or not you have played the game before.
