FLYING START TO THE NEW YEAR FOR BICESTER LADIES 1’S HOCKEY TEAM

Bicester Ladies 1’s had some concerns that the momentum of their excellent season so far would have stalled as a result of poor weather and the Christmas break. Although the team were a little rusty at times, a convincing win on Saturday over Sonning Ladies 3’s demonstrated a continued desire to win. The late afternoon away match was played under floodlights which cast shadows over large parts of the pitch and made it difficult to play in all parts of the pitch. Nevertheless, Bicester started the game strongly and dominated play for the first 15 minutes, but without score. Some excellent passing and moves between the midfield and forwards in open play, however, were well defended by Sonning until the 15 minute Kath James scored her first at a dive from an excellent cross ball from Charlie Humphreys. For the next 10 minutes Bicester lost some of their formation and focus and Sonning were able to make some strong attacks on the Bicester goal, without result. Before half time James scored her second goal and then Jan Southam scored her first of the year with a neat reverse sweep from the top of the area. The team went into the break fully in control of the game. The second half started strongly for Bicester with a further goal from Southam and two more for James. The pick of the goals was a stunning high reverse flick over the head of the keeper by James. During the last 5 minutes Bicester became a little complacent and allowed Sonning to score a soft goal 5 minutes from the end. Both sides demonstrated commitment to the match and, as you would expect, tempers flared a little and there was some quite physical tackling by both sides – culminating in a green card for Bicester’s Amy Jackson. Special mention must be made of the strong midfield defence work by Lisa Ryan and Hannah Newell and of Chloe Ranson, playing her debut match for the 1’s team at the age of 13. Woman of the Match was Hannah Newell

Bicester ladies 1’s 6 -0 witney 2’s

Bicester Ladies 1’s Hockey team continue to ride high! Bicester Ladies 1’s Hockey team continued to maintain their top position in the Trysports Division 1 League with a 6- 0 win over previous second in the League challengers, West Witney 2’s. In what proved to be the toughest challenge of the season so far, Bicester went ahead after 2 minutes with an excellent reverse stick sweep from the top of the area by Kath James. After some good play from both sides for twenty minutes, Susie Miller took the score to 2-0 before half time after receiving a well directed through ball from Lisa Ryan and then finishing with a superb solo strike from wide on the right. Although Bicester had not really got into top gear during the first half, this was to change after the break.  A few minutes into the second half Charlie Humphreys secured her 15th goal of the season with a sweep in from the right. Bicester’s defence were then put to the test but, spearheaded by Centre Back Yvonne Jackson, they survived a number of Penalty corner attacks from West Witney. The game was made safe after Kath James scored her second from a neat side pass from Humphreys and then Hannah Newell scored her second of the season from a short corner move. In the final ten minutes of the game Lilla Venning, having just survived being felled by the West Witney keeper, tipped the ball into the net from a cross strike delivered by James. Man of the Match was Susie Miller.

Bicester ladies 1’s 5 -1 reading ladies 3s

Not Humphrey but HumphFOUR!

Bicester Ladies 1’s Hockey team maintained their unbeaten start to the League season with a 5 – 1 win over Reading Ladies 3’s. The first half began with a goal from Charlie Humphreys as the clock showed 56 seconds and the next 30 minutes were completely dominated by Bicester with little response from Reading. Humphreys scored her second after 8 minutes following a great strike from Kath James had a final touch from Humphreys to ‘make sure’ of the goal. James went on the score board with a stylish reverse sweep after 15 minutes. Humphreys scored her third from a narrow angled strike from the edge of the D and fourth before the half time whistle after good midfield play from Janet Southam and Hannah Newell. To Reading’s credit they came out from the second half prepared to fight back and made certain that they disrupted Bicester’s game with some physical hockey. Bicester’s defence was put under pressure and, despite a number of good saves by Keeper Joanna Underhill, Reading scored from a deflection. Although Bicester then allowed their game to be a little unfocused the team kept their cool as Reading tempers flared and the Reading captain was sin binned. For the last 15 minutes of the game Bicester took control back again and made a number of attacks on goal which were defended well by Reading’s Keeper. The game ended 5 -1  to Bicester which leaves them 4 points clear at the top of the Trysports Division 1 League having scored 35 goals and conceded 2.  Man of the Match was Hannah Newell. Bicester look forward to their next League game at home on 6th November when they face nearest rivals in the League, West Witney.

GAVINA JAMES SCORES FOUR IN 9 GOALWHITEWASH!

Bicester Ladies 1’s Hockey team maintained their unbeaten start to the League season with a 9 - 0 victory over Abingdon. In a one sided but scrappy game, Bicester went ahead after 10 minutes with a straight strike from a penalty corner by Centre Forward Gavina James. Over the next 20 minutes James continued in rampant style, slotting 3 more goals past the Abingdon goalie. All three goals came from open play and followed neat controlled interplay and passing between the forwards and mid field. Just before half time Jan Southam took the score to 5 – 0 with a nice reverse sweep, after the Abingdon defence was broken down by a combination of passes between Su Wheeler and Charlie Humphreys. During the second half Bicester kept the momentum against a demoralised Abingdon. Eager to be more involved in the game the Bicester defence pushed up the pitch and provided the platform for further goals, first a penalty corner from Humphreys, then from Lilla Venning and a second from Southam. The rout was complete when Venning scored her second from a cross pass delivered by Amy Richardson. Man of the Match was Gavina James. Bicester lie well clear at the top of Division 1 with 25 goals scored in 3 games and none conceded.

Bicester ladies 1st team  v 5 -1  AMERSHAM AND CHALFONT 2’s

Bicester Ladies 1’s Hockey team maintained their unbeaten run in the Trysports Division 1 League with a 5 -1 win over Amersham and Chalfont Ladies 2’s. Recently demoted from the Premier League, Amersham and Chalfont promised to present a greater challenge to Bicester than they have faced over recent weeks. For the first 30 minutes Bicester were in complete control of the game with excellent movement around the pitch. After 10 minutes Bicester took the lead from a well practised short corner move that was swept at the far post by Kath James and the goal converted by Beth Cammegh. Shortly afterwards the second goal was scored by Lilla Venning who got on the end of a pass from Charlie Humphreys following open play movement between the forwards and midfield. Two more goals followed before half time - the first from an excellent deflected shot by Amy Richardson from the left post after a well directed pass from James. James got on the score board just before halftime, again after nice passing between the midfield and Humphreys.  After halftime, Amersham and Chalfont had decided that they had nothing to lose but to take the game to Bicester. An admirable fight back ensued and the Bicester defence, considerably under used so far this season, found themselves under pressure. Bicester lost some of their formation and control but managed to weather the attacks, including a spectacular save on the line from Hannah Newell and a number of good saves from Fi Boyer in goal. Twenty minutes into the second half, Amersham and Chalfont scored a good goal from a straight strike from the top of the D and it was definitely game on. Bicester were a bit disappointed with conceding their first goal of the season and struck back quickly with an attack by Susie Miller and the rebound goal scored by Venning. The final score was 5 -1 and Woman of the Match was Hannah Newell.

HUMPHREYS IS HATRICK TASTIC!!!

After last weeks 10- 0 win over Maidenhead morale was high within the Bicester Ladies 1’s Hockey team as they took on Newbury and Thatcham on Saturday at home. Newbury withstood 20 minutes of pressure from Bicester and the game was quite even until Charlie Humphreys pounced on a deflection from the Newbury goalkeeper. Despite some good team play with solid defence and a number of good chances of goals, Bicester were unable to extend the advantage before halftime. Bicester came out from the break determined to make use of their opportunities and to put pressure on Newbury straightaway. A great ball through from Lisa Ryan, sent Kath James away in an attack and a neat square pass to Jan Southam saw the goal put away. From that point the game became more open and there was strong play on both sides. An excellent aerial strike from James was saved brilliantly on the line by Newbury but the expected penalty flick was not given as Humphreys had followed the save and hit the ball straight into the goal. The fourth goal came from a long run up field by Lilla Venning, followed by neat short passes with James and then angled into goal by Venning. The defensive platform this week was excellent and Humphreys hatrick came from a training exercise move begun by Lisa Ryan and Susie Miller and then finished off by Humphreys. At this point Newbury were throwing caution to the wind and made some strong attacks on the Bicester goal which were defended by strong tackling from the backs, especially from Yvonne Jackson. The final goal came from a long ball through from the defence which was taken on by James who beat a number of defenders before passing to Southam to score her second. Final score 6 -0. Man of the Match was Lisa Ryan. This score keeps Bicester top of Division 1 with a perfect score and a +16 goal difference.

Bicester ladies 1’s v Wallingford ladies 2’s  result 11 – 0

11 goal whitewash for Bicester Ladies 1’s

Bicester Ladies 1’s Hockey team maintained their unbeaten run with an 11 – 0 whitewash of same League rivals, Wallingford Ladies 2’s. The non League game got off to a bright start with a first goal of the season from Lucy Birtles within the first two minutes.  Over the next 30 minutes Bicester maintained all the momentum against an inexperienced Wallingford keeper and goals came from lots of different players. Susie Miller scored from a well practised short corner routine, newcomer Shelley Richardson scored from a lovely straight strike from the top of the D and Amy Richardson secured her second of the season with an excellent rebound. Before halftime, in form Charlie Humphreys had secured her fourth hatrick of the season from a combination of short corner routines, open play straight strike and rebound reverse stick sweeps. After the last two weeks of a slight dip in performance from the team during the second half the key was to maintain complete control of the game. The team responded well to Skipper Lilla Venning’s request to maintain focus and be ruthless to the end. 4 further goals completed the rout with one from Hannah Newell from another short corner routine and the other 3 from captain  Lilla Venning to give her her first hatrick of the season. Bicester look forward to meeting Wallingford again in the League at the start of December and to playing closest rivals in the League, West Witney, this Saturday at home. Man of the match was Lucy Birtles.

2009/10 Season Match Reports

Bicester Ladies I 3 vs 0 Gerrards Cross Ladies I

The away fixture was a very close affair with Bicester stealing the winner in the final minute of the game. Up until the last 10 minutes of this game there was a suspicion that the return fixture would go the same way with a late winner for either side.

Bicester dominated possession from the start but the extended lay off caused by the snow clearly took effect as Bicester failed to capitalise on a string of good chances. These chances included two one on one opportunities falling to Charlotte Cochrane and Lilla Venning. Although Bicester were dominating the game, Gerrards Cross were very dangerous on the counter attack as their defence was able to provide an accurate long ball to either of their two forwards. This tactic caught Bicester out a few times but dame of the game Joanna Underhill was the only Bicester player who seemed to have improved with the Christmas break, pulling off a string of last gasp desperate saves to deny the visitors.

Nerves were beginning to fray as Bicester continued to besiege the Gerrards Cross goal without success, until Charlie Humphreys byline cross wrong footed the defence; providing Charlotte Cochrane with a simple tap in from 2 metres out. This lead did little to settle Bicester as Gerrards Cross still threatened to score on the break and Michelle Dexter was called upon to save a shot on the line. With five minutes to play the game was made safe. First when Janet Southam’s penalty corner strike was deflected by a defender into the net and then with two minutes to play Tara Cochrane was able to dribble to the top of the D unchallenged and had all the time required to place her sweep shot in the bottom left hand corner and put the game beyond doubt.

7th November 2009

Bicester Ladies First XI was back to winning ways again with a comprehensive win 5-1 against Abingdon Pilgrims. After squandering a number of goal scoring opportunities early on, Bicester went ahead after 20 minutes with a strong strike from Janet Southam. Abingdon were quick to counter attack from the restart and the game was soon levelled at 1-1. After a disallowed goal and some flared tempers, Bicester went in to half time rather frustrated. After a stern word from Captain Charlie Humphreys, Bicester regained their discipline and played an exemplary second half. Charlotte Cochrane found the net from a deceptive angled shot from the right and then Charlie humphreys took the side to 3-1 with a sweet reverse angled sweep. Abingdon continued to contest strongly for the game, putting considerable pressure on Bicester’s defence but were denied any more goals by strong defence throughout. The game was put out of doubt by Lilla Venning who scored the last two goals from lifted sweeps from the left. Dame of the Game was Janet Southam for her domination of the centre of the pitch and for creating huge space for goal scoring opportunities. The team currently sit top of their division.

19/9/09 Bicester Ladies 1st 3 vs 1 Sonning Ladies 3rd

Bicester Ladies 1st team opened their Trysports League Division 1 season with a 3-1 win over Sonning 3s.  Bicester started the match brightly, putting Sonning’s defence under pressure from the start.  However, a break from Sonning led to Bicester conceding a harsh penalty flick and the visitors took an early lead. Bicester continued to attack well, creating plenty of chances but still failed to convert, at half time Sonning had managed to hold on to their lead.  The second half started in much the same way with yet more Bicester opportunities being missed, nevertheless Bicester played through their frustrations and the forwards were rewarded for all their hard work when Lilia Venning pushed the ball past the Sonning keeper to bring Bicester back on level terms. The goal seemed to give Bicester extra confidence and soon the early frustrations of the match were forgotten as Janet Southam scored Bicester’s second with a well placed strike.A full time penalty corner more than sealed the game as janet Southam scored her second with an accurate flick as the clock reached it’s final second to ensure a fine win for the Ladies 1s. Hannah Newell was the player of the match with a quality performance in midfield while the whole team should be proud of an excellent start to the season.

12/9/09 Bicester Ladies I 3 vs 4 Banbury Ladies II

A close fought match between these two sides who on paper are a league apart with the Banbury side playing in the higher league. The ladies I’s first game on the new pitch could not have got off to a worse start as Banbury attacked aggressively and scored within the first two minutes. Going a goal down focused Bicester on the job in hand and a midfield battle ensued between both sides with neither side dominating. Chances were few and far between for either side and it took a defensive mix up by the Banbury defence and the resulting obstruction preventing a shot on goal by the Bicester attack provided Janet Southam with a penalty stroke which she calmly converted.

Bicester could have gone two up, when Charlie Humphreys powerful cross was deflected goalwards by Charlotte Cochrane. However the umpire deemed that the ball had not crossed the goal line before ricocheting out.

Banbury then took the lead from a well worked short corner putting the ball just inside the right post and out of keeper Joanna Underhill’s reach.

In the second half Banbury increased their lead catching Bicester on the counter attack but Bicester were soon back in it with a well worked penalty corner routine enabling Charlotte Batty to score from close range. Banbury then regained their lead when Underhill saved the ball but a Banbury winger pounced on the loose ball and scored from a narrow angle. Bicester once more reduced the deficit with a goal mouth scramble and Lilla Venning having the final touch but with time running out Banbury came away victorious.
