Bicester Area Quicksticks Hockey Festival 2009

The inaugural Bicester Area Quicksticks Hockey Festival for children in Years 5 and 6 took place at The Cooper School on 25 November 2009. The event was organised by Bicester Hockey Club in conjunction with the North Oxfordshire School Sport Partnership. 137 children representing Schools from across Bicester and the outlying villages participated in the Festival. There were 18 teams in the competition from St. Edburg’s, Five Acres, Langford Village, Fringford, Glory Farm, Bure Park, Launton, Southwold, Charlton-on-Otmoor, Brookside and Finmere Primary Schools. Junior and Senior members of Bicester Hockey Club and young leaders from The Cooper School umpired the matches and acted as scorekeepers.

Many of the youngsters involved in the event have been receiving hockey coaching in their schools, provided by Andy Walkey from Bicester Hockey Club, and the Festival provided an ideal opportunity for them to put their skills to the test in a competitive but fun environment. After a series of exciting group matches, Bure Park emerged as Festival winners, defeating Brookside 4-2 in the Final. All of the children received certificates, provided by the North Oxfordshire School Sport Partnership, which were presented by Mal Leather, the President of Bicester Hockey Club.

Bicester Hockey Club Junior Training has now started for the season, based at Coopers School and running from 1000 to 1200 for all age groups (9 years to 13 years) (except on match days when the period will be extended).

Prior to the junior session commencing Lewis Beck was presented with his trophy as the "U14 Boys Players player of the year" by Lee Mearns on behalf of the U14 Boys (and Girls's). Lewis who only started playing last year also made his senior debut yesterday, for Bicester 4's against Thame 1's; due to shortages of players for the visiting team Lewis and Lee both played a half for the opposition resultuing in Lewis playing his first senior hockey for Thame 1's! Playing for Bicester 4's in the second half sadly saw him ending up on the losing side, but only after a solid start to his hockey career.
